The private house was built between 1771 and 1774 by the Marquis de Clapiers-Cabris and his wife, sister of Mirabeau. The Milanese architect Jean Orello made the plans. The street facade follows the gradient of the ground. The only decoration visible from the front is a grimacing mascaron representing the head of Gorgon, above the front door. As in the majority of the townhouses of Grasse, the most ornate facade overlooks the garden where the central part topped by a sculpted cornice and iron balcony gives great elegance to the whole building. In 1921, the townhouse became the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence.
